The loss of cotton would be felt most sharply in rural communities that depend on it. In many cotton-growing regions, the crop provides one of the few reliable sources of cash income for smallholder farmers and can thrive in semi-arid areas where other crops struggle. That income circulates through local economies, supporting shops, transportation, schools, health care, equipment suppliers, and other businesses.
Cotton also helps sustain agricultural infrastructure and services. Without it, many communities would lose jobs, local spending, market connections, and a crucial source of economic stability where alternatives may be difficult to find.
